WHAT IS Liposuction?

Even though you watch what you eat and exercise, you might still have stubborn pockets of fat that prevent you from feeling fully confident in your body. Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa is proud to offer the latest techniques to effectively eliminate fat from the areas that cause you the most distress. Surgical liposuction is a body contouring treatment that reduces fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, neck, or other areas to produce a more contoured appearance. This treatment at Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa can be blended to treat several body parts and paired with a range of other surgeries.

During your initial visit, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Tamburrino will assess areas of your body you wish to address so you can attain your aesthetic goals. In addition to traditional liposuction, our Doylestown, PA office also performs Smartlipo. Dr. Tamburrino will discuss your many options with you after performing an evaluation of your problem areas and learning about your aesthetic aims.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR LIPO?

Liposuction is great for individuals who are at a healthy weight but have stubborn pockets of fat that have not responded to exercise and dieting efforts. Men and women considering liposuction should have healthy skin that is taut and elastic because this procedure is not meant to address loose, stretched-out tissue that hangs. It's also important to realize that liposuction is not a solution for weight loss. Women undergoing liposuction should be past pregnancies as having children after receiving liposuction may compromise the lasting outcome. During your initial consultation, Dr. Tamburrino will help you visualize your results and set realistic expectations. Women and men who are not a candidate for traditional liposuction may be considered for Smartlipo, depending on their goals and condition.

What are the Benefits of Getting Liposuction?

Our Doylestown, PA patients who receive liposuction treatment enjoy a number of benefits, including:

  • Tackling pesky weight and fat that resists other, less-invasive forms of management
  • Transferable treatment option for treating various body areas of concern
  • Increased self-confidence and health at reaching your ideal look and weight
  • Permanent removal of stubborn fat cells

HOW IS LIPO DONE?

This treatment is performed in an outpatient setting with the patient under general anesthesia. A punch-hole incision is placed in the skin where a cannula will be placed. The cannula is a tube that makes it easier to loosen the fat as it is being vacuumed out. After the fatty deposits have been suctioned out, Dr. Tamburrino will close the small incision. Depending on the number of areas being treated, your procedure could take several hours. In a separate area for recovery, your post-op nurse will assist you with managing any discomfort and care for your incisions until your discharge.

What to Expect

You may be in recovery at home from liposuction surgery for several weeks, depending on the number of sections treated and the amount of fat removed. It's typical to have bruising and swelling for one or two weeks, and you can have the sutures taken out 7 – 10 days after surgery. What is most important following liposuction is giving your body time to rest and heal. Once you return to your job after your procedure, you should do your best to go slow. To build up your strength, try light workouts and go for walks as recommended by Dr. Tamburrino. Keep in mind, you may notice some changes soon after your surgery, but it takes 6 – 10 months before your new body shape and contour are attained.

LIPOSUCTION FAQS

What about nonsurgical liposuction?
Thanks to modern advancements, there are many minimally invasive and nonsurgical options to reduce fat. Some popular methods are CoolSculpting, Kybella, and Smartlipo. While these nonsurgical treatments can help some patients reduce mild to moderate fat pockets, liposuction is best for most patients. Liposuction surgery produces more dramatic and consistent results. Ask Dr. Tamburrino about nonsurgical options during your consultation. He will go over the benefits of both methods and help you decide which is best for your goals.

What about loose skin?
Surgical liposuction only corrects excess fat in the body. For loose skin, Dr. Tamburrino may suggest combining liposuction with a lift surgery. Lipo is often performed along with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, thighplasty, or arm lift, to remove pockets of fat and produce the best results.

Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will be made and sutured. This will leave scars; however, Dr. Tamburrino does his best to reduce their appearance. This starts with making small, thin incisions in less visible areas or the natural folds of your body. After your surgery, Dr. Tamburrino or a member of his team will go over how to care for your stitches so they heal flat and fade.

Will my results last?
Before you have liposuction surgery, it's important to be prepared to maintain your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in an area, you can still gain and lose weight. Dr. Tamburrino suggests that you be at or near your ideal weight before having liposuction surgery. Afterward, it's best to stay within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will also alter your results; however, a second surgery or mommy makeover can be done to refresh your appearance.
