WHAT IS Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a personalized procedure that adds volume to breasts to create a fuller look. It's widely known as one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed in the world today, providing women who are unhappy with the appearance of their breasts numerous opportunities for improvement. Utilizing either breast implants or fat grafting, this enhancement surgery improves the shape, size, and symmetry of the breasts, and produces an attractive outcome to suit your wants. Board-certified and fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Tamburrino specializes in breast enhancement surgeries and performs numerous breast augmentations at his esteemed facility each year.
During your private consultation at Prestige Institute for Plastic Surgery, Dr. Tamburrino will address your aesthetic desires and concerns and provide you with information on all of the options available. He takes special care to understand your concerns and goals and tailors a surgical plan to achieve the feminine silhouette you desire.
During your consultation with Dr. Tamburrino, the appropriate implant will be recommended based on your body frame and the results you wish to achieve. Implants for augmentation are made in an assortment of shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures — all of these aspects are taken into consideration when creating your personalized treatment plan. The most commonly used implants are saline or silicone, both are widely popular and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for use. It's important to know that candidates considering implants made with saline must be at least 18 years old while patients must be at least 22 years old in order to receive augmentation with silicone. Other options include a form-stable implant known as a gummy bear implant, as well as enhancement with fat grafting. Along with the type of implant selected, there are other important factors to consider.
Breast implant size is determined by the cubic centimeters (CCs) of silicone or saline used. To figure the volume you want, Dr. Tamburrino will measure how much native breast tissue exists and the size you wish to attain. During surgery, it's normal for Dr. Tamburrino to temporarily switch out several implants to get a better idea of your ideal size.
Breast implants come in either a teardrop or round shape. Both shapes are commonly used; however, a large majority of our patients prefer the round-shaped implant because it often looks more natural while adding a fullness to the top of the breast that many women want.
Breast implant profile relates to the outward projection of the implant. Meaning, this is what is visible from the side view. Most projections include a profile that ranges from low to extra high.

WHO GETS BREAST AUGMENTATION?
The decision to go through with mammoplasty (breast aug) is personal. If you are thinking about having this surgery, it is essential that you do it for the right reasons. You should be healthy with breasts that are fully developed, and you should be the proper age to receive implants. If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your chest because they appear small or asymmetrical, you may benefit from breast augmentation surgery. Moreover, if your breasts have been affected by aging, nursing, or weight loss, this surgery can bring them back to life with increased shape and fullness. It is also a welcomed option if you lift weights or have an overall lack of natural breast tissue.
HOW IS BREAST AUG DONE?
Incision placement and implant location are decisions that will be made ahead of your surgery during your consultative appointment. To perform breast augmentation, an incision is created and the selected implant will be slipped into its ideal position. Your breast implant will be placed either under or over the pectoral muscle, depending on your unique situation. Where to place the implant is based on varying factors, including the size and type of implant, along with the professional opinion of Dr. Tamburrino. Regardless of incision type, scarring is generally minimal. When it comes to incisions, Dr. Tamburrino utilizes the scarless transaxillary (armpit) approach to ensure that your scars are well-hidden and as tiny as possible.
What to Expect
Breast enhancement surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. Following the creation of the incision, the breast implant will be deposited into a specially made pocket and set in its proper position. After this process, the incision is carefully secured with skin adhesives or sutures. All patients will be taken to a private recovery space to be observed and monitored before being released. You will be sent home wearing a medical sports bra to assist with swelling.
Within a few days, the swelling will start to slowly go away, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they settle into their new position. Patients can resume normal activities within the first week; however, exercise should be delayed for approximately 6 – 8 weeks. Breast enhancement surgery creates beautiful outcomes that feel and appear normal. This treatment can be life-changing for many patients and provide them with the chance to feel more self-assured.
BREAST AUGMENTATION FAQS
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your treatment plan might include breast augmentation, a breast lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes excess skin and improves the appearance of the breasts while augmentation enhances their shape and size. During your consultation with Dr. Tamburrino, he will listen to your concerns and goals before explaining your best treatment options. An augmentation and lift are often included in a mommy makeover to rejuvenate the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after breast augmentation, be sure to tell Dr. Tamburrino during your consultation. It's usually possible to breastfeed after augmentation surgery if the right placement technique is used. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can affect your results so it's better to wait until after you are done having children to have breast surgery.
Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you would like to remove or replace your implants. If this happens, Dr. Tamburrino can perform breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants will be either replaced with new implants or removed entirely. If you want to have your implants removed, you might need to have excess skin excised as well because larger implants can stretch the skin. For any concerns or questions after your augmentation surgery, schedule an appointment at Prestige Institute for Plastic Surgery to learn more about your options.
Do implants cause breast cancer?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a link between implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). This is not breast cancer but a cancer of the immune system. According to WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is very rare, but if caught early, it is easy to treat. Dr. Tamburrino encourages all patients with implants to get frequent screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Prestige Institute for Plastic Surgery if you notice any concerns, like swelling.
