WHAT IS Lip Augmentation?
Whether you have always had slim lips or have lost fullness in the lips over time, surgical or lip augmentation can help give you a fuller, more shapely pout. Surgical lip augmentation may be done by way of silicone implants or a lip lift (vermilion advancement) to give you the shape you want with results that can last for many years. If you're interested in lip augmentation and what this procedure could do for your appearance, contact Prestige Institute for Plastic Surgery at our office in Doylestown, PA or Cherry Hill, NJ to schedule a consultation. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Tamburrino will discuss all of your options and help you develop your unique treatment plan for lip augmentation. The techniques he may recommend are:
- Lip implants: For the most lasting results, silicone implants can be placed in the upper and/or lower lips to improve the volume and shape of your mouth.
- Lip lift, or vermilion advancement: This surgical technique adjusts the outer lines of the upper and/or lower lips to increase the area and shape of the mouth.
WHO CAN GET LIP AUGMENTATION?
Surgical lip augmentation can help you achieve more voluminous lips and a shapelier mouth. Depending on your concerns and goals, you can choose a surgical lip augmentation with an implant or a lip lift to raise the height of the Cupid's bow. If you're interested in nonsurgical solutions, it may be beneficial to consider starting with dermal fillers to see how different amounts of volume look before moving to a surgical lip enhancement. Ideal candidates for upper and/or lower lip augmentation at Prestige Institute for Plastic Surgery:
- Have naturally thin lips or have age-related volume loss in the lips
- Have asymmetrical or uneven lips
- Want to improve the balance of their whole face
- Are in good overall health
HOW IS LIP AUGMENTATION DONE?
When performing your lip augmentation, Dr. Tamburrino may utilize one of the following techniques:
- Lip Implants: To place implants, a small incision is made in the corner of the lips. It can take 1 – 3 weeks for the implant(s) to settle into their final position and for any swelling to subside, but this solution will give you improvements that last for a long time.
- Lip lift/vermilion advancement: For a lip lift, a thin incision is made along the upper and/or lower line of the lip. An area of skin outside the lips will be removed, then the lips will be pulled to cover the excised skin and sutured into position. This lip advancement surgery gives lasting improvements to the shape and size of the mouth.
What to Expect
It's important to pay attention to the aftercare instructions provided by Dr. Tamburrino to achieve faster healing and your best results. After a surgical lip augmentation, your mouth will be tender or sore for several days. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain medications are suggested to alleviate any swelling and discomfort. Whether you received lip enhancement with implants or a lip lift, surgical lip augmentation provides patients with lasting results, but the natural aging process can alter your outcomes over time. You will be asked to attend a follow-up appointment so we can monitor your healing and progress. Once your post-op swelling has gone down and the lips return to a natural look, you will be able to fully enjoy your results for many years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get the lips of a specific celebrity?
Like many other patients, you may come in and request the full, sexy lips of an actor or actress. Having pictures of what you want can help Dr. Tamburrino understand your goals; however, it can be difficult to create the exact shape and appearance of another person. During your consultation, Dr. Tamburrino will listen to your goals before talking about your options for surgical lip augmentation. From there, he will create your customized treatment plan.
Should I get implants, a fat transfer, or fillers?
Depending on your specific goals, Dr. Tamburrino can help you choose between implants, dermal fillers, or a fat transfer for your augmentation. If you're uncertain about what you want or don't want surgery, dermal fillers may be a better option once you're able to determine the amount of volume you want before proceeding to a fat transfer or lip implants. During your consultation, Dr. Tamburrino will explain the pros and cons of each of your choices so you can decide which one is right for you and your goals.
Do lip implants look fake?
Lip implants are created from a silicone material that is designed to look and feel natural. With his years of training and experience, Dr. Tamburrino places lip implants so your results will look natural and beautiful. During your initial consultation, he will discuss the size and shape of upper and/or lower lip implants to achieve your needs and goals. After a few months, the implants will get into their final position and the swelling from surgery will be gone so you can see your results.
Is lip augmentation reversible?
Usually, most patients are very pleased with their lip augmentation. However, if you're unhappy with your new look, you may have your implants removed. If you're uncertain about lip implants, Dr. Tamburrino may suggest fillers since they're minimally invasive and the results dissipate over time.
